LEATHAL SEA LIFE ICONS

I was tasked with creating a series of related icons centered around aquatic creatures. After initial brainstorming, I settled on lethal sea life as my subject, and I selected nine different sea creatures that were depicted as sharp or deadly in some capacity. Once the marine life was selected, I then had to create a cohesive identity to ahead to while designing recognizable icons.

PROCESS WORK

The process began with ideating a potential theme. Water creatures were the main subject, and a more niche theme needed to be incorporated into the icon set. After settling on ocean life for its variety of diverse and easily recognizable marine life, I decided to depict specimens that could be considered dangerous and lethal, whether it be by appearance, incident records, or general stigmatism. Once a more precise topic was settled on, I put together mood boards of my nine marine animals and began sketching possible icon designs.

After the rapid sketch iteration phase, I selected some of the best sketches to refine into a few different styles to find one that best suited my topic. Eventually, I decided that a bold outline with strategic breaks was a unique style that would showcase the sharp angles and clean curves of each animal. This choice alluded to sharp and dangerous features, while the broken lines left viewers feeling subconsciously uneasy, and still keeping the smooth exterior that most sea life are known for.
